Today Granger Community Church lit up it's very first fiber backbone ... network connectivity via a LASER (make sure you say laser like Dr. Evil of Austin Powers fame).
Of course we ended up discovering that the contractors didn't "wire" the fiber patch panels correctly (at least not for SC connectors) so what should have been a simple plug-n-go ended up taking several hours of trouble shooting and some finger pointing then some phone calls then contractors rewiring then finally link lights.
So our new expansion is now "hot" and tomorrow we'll start adding PC's to the new children's rooms and give the fiber a good work over...all the new network runs are cat6 so things should be very speedy.
Any suggestions on tools to do network speed tests? We'd like to get some good baselines on our network infrastructure before we do much more with VLANs. I assume running VLANs decreases network performance, but also assume it's not much of a hit. So some way to measure this would be helpful.
