Life at 28.8K
My parents live in the middle of corn and bean fields on a gravel road. There is no such thing as cable or DSL access in these parts. Internet speed is ... well, let's just say that speed isn't part of internet access out here. Tonight is the first time I've ever witnessed a 28.8 connection on their computer. Typically it's only 26.4...which is painfully slow. Of course 28.8 is really nothing better. Makes you REALLY appreciate any form of high speed.
Life at 28.8 is frustrating ... I'm talking I want to inflict pain on something frustrating. The internet is no longer geared towards such connection rates. Except for Google's main page, everwhere you visit is a great lesson in patience.
Outlook Web Access ... 30 seconds before I could see anything in my GCC inbox.
Our church website at GCCwired.com ... over 1 minute before most of the graphics loaded and even then the rotating main images didn't show up for another 30 seconds.
MSN.com ... 45 seconds and still some ad graphics weren't loaded.
Foxnews.com ... 45 seconds before I could see any text at all!
My bloglines list ... 25 seconds.
This blog ... 25 seconds to see all the text and other 45s before all graphics were loaded.
It took over a minute before I could actually begin typing this post via Typepad.com
It's impossible to run Window's Updates. I have them bring the computer to my house once a year so I can get all the windows patches installed.
Anti-virus and Anti-spyware updates take 10-30mins....arrrgh!
On this day of Thanksgiving I'm thankful I have high speed internet :-)
Dude! I am with you on this one today. The EXACT same deal for me, except I'm lucky enough to be connecting at 46.6 at my parents-in-law's house. Wow.
This puts the nail in the coffin for me. I have gone 4 years without dial-up and I plan on never, ever using it again. It is so frustrating, I think I'd rather NOT have the Internet at all than have it at this speed.

and I was complaining because my inlaws didn't have wireless... I feel for you man!

Jason - and I thought I had it bad. I was at my in-laws for the holiday and their DSL was only 512K download and 128K upload.
My home DSL is 3.0M/768K. So I was down to 1/6th my normal experience.
I was going crazy - WOW you guys with only dial up access - I don't know what I would do.
Actually - I would just go without until I got home.
Later..
