Google Spreadsheet

I got to play with the Google Spreadsheet today ... thanks AJ!

It's pretty slick if you need a quick way to share basic spreadsheets.  AJ and I were able to edit the same sheet and chat within the sheet...nice!

I uploaded an excel spreadsheet and noticed my custom time formatting (mm:ss.000) did not make it through the import and that column data was hosed.  A somewhat complex calculation was also dropped during the import...but the values were left.  However, I was surprised that the formula did work when I pasted it into google.  This formula takes a cell with firstname lastname and makes it firstname lastnameinitial ... Jason Powell = Jason P

=LEFT(TRIM(C2),SEARCH(" ",TRIM(C2))+1)

So that's a good indication other complex formulas should work as well ... though they may get removed during upload.

Sorting function works ok ... but the auto column/row resize doesn't which is something they def need.  I also uploaded a 300k spreadsheet ... which took a long time to load.  Mass edits took a long time as well.  So large spreadsheets act sluggish.  It's still beta so I expect a few bugs.  Should be a nice app once ready for mass consumption.

If you'd like to play with Google Spreadsheet, shoot me your gmail email and I'll invite you to edit one of my shared sheets ... right now you can only share with gmail users.  So far I can shared sheets with others but not send individual invites to Google Spreadsheet.
