Does it take a while for your PC or laptop to shut down? Having problems with Roaming Profiles?
Enter Microsoft's User Profile Hive Cleanup Service
Many 3rd party applications don't completely terminate when you close them or Windows tries to close them. Thus Windows will wait a while for those apps before finally attempting to completely terminate them and continue shuting down. The Hive Cleanup Service was written to better manage rogue apps that don't want to shutdown as they should.
From Microsoft: The User Profile Hive Cleanup service helps to ensure user sessions are completely terminated when a user logs off. System processes and applications occasionally maintain connections to registry keys in the user profile after a user logs off. In those cases the user session is prevented from completely ending. This can result in problems when using Roaming User Profiles in a server environment or when using locked profiles as implemented through the Shared Computer Toolkit for Windows XP.
We'll do some initial testing before rolling it out of course. I just put it on my home PC and laptop. Of course the problem is I very rarely shutdown or logoff any of my computers ... even the laptop just gets placed into sleep almost all the time. Time to bust out a stopwatch and do some back-to-back testing :-)
