So a bunch of us geeks got to chat at the recent IT Roundtable. Ed and I then chatted with more geeks during lunch and breaks last Thurs and Friday at the Innovative Church Conference.
Tuesday I got a call from Jason at Northwoods Community Church and for an hour we chatted on various IT topics. Today I got an email from Will at Windsor Crossing Community Church asking if we could chat about church IT ... we're skypin' tomorrow afternoon. Terry from Fellowship Church also emailed today wanting to chat about virtualization. And I still need to chat with Ernie from mediaministry.org ... sorry for droppin' the ball Ernie :-)
So what? So, there is obviously a GREAT need for us church IT people to dialog ... and the longer I'm in this position and chat with others the greater the need appears. For instance ... the IT Roundtable had no advertisement beyond this blog and a very small blurb in Church Executive magazine ... registration was filled within 28 days of being opened ... 10 some churches wanted to attend the Roundtable but were placed on a waiting list! I can only imagine the response if this were actually advertised through our WiredChurches.com resources and beyond.
So cut to the chase...
What are your thoughts on doing a Church IT skypecast maybe once or twice a month? It's free ... requires no travel ... no hotel ... simple prep ... can hold 100 attendees. It would run say an hour probably during business hours (maybe Friday?). I suppose we could even record it and have it available as a podcast for those unable to listen in live. I've thought about this skypecast idea before, but it's really been on my mind since the roundtable ... so much more today that I finally decided to make this post at 1am
Us Jesus Geeks need to dialog and network ... the need is so clearly evident ... now it's about figuring out simple yet effective ways to do so.
Please leave your thoughts ... pro/con/whatever. I know there are others of you out there thinking along these same lines. Let's get the ball rollin' and see what happens.
Some initial questions...
- What day of the week works best for most?
- Morning or Afternoon? I'm thinking 11am Eastern to keep away from lunch times?
- Or should it be late evening or night so volunteers and part-time IT staff can participate?
- Once or twice a month?
- Format thoughts and ideas?
- Who else would be willing to facilitate the Skypecast from time to time? I don't want this to end up as the Jasoncast :-)
Comment away my fellow Jesus Geeks!
