reminder: live Church IT Podcast TONIGHT, July 17, at 10pm Eastern

ChurchIT_PODCAST_SQ_300Don't forget the time change ... our interactive podcast has moved to 10pm Eastern ... still the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month.  Talkshoe is now very easy to join ... no user/pass required and no client to install ... more info at www.churchITpodcast.com

Tonight we'll get to see a 'webex'-ish demo of Solarwinds Orion network monitoring solution via our church IT peer Derek.  After that who knows what interesting stuff we'll discuss ;-)

The plan is to integrate more screencasting into each podcast so we can have more visual presentations instead of just plain ole audio.

Got something you'd like to demo for all to see?  Send me an email and we'll get you on the schedule.

Cya tonight!

Church IT Podcast Time Change

ChurchIT_PODCAST_SQ_300After 30 episodes it's time for a change to our podcast ... a time change to be exact ... from 2pm to 10pm Eastern.  What the??  Well, it's becoming more difficult for people to squeeze time into their day to participate (including me!) so we'll try a night slot and see if that helps.

For sure this will allow some new 'faces' to join us since I know several IT volunteers that can't dismiss their day gigs to join our podcast during the afternoon.  I'm really seeing this as a positive although it does interfere with family time a bit.  2 hours or so a month shouldn't be a hard sell though :-)

So make a note on your online calendar of choice ... podcast moving to 10pm Eastern ... still every 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month.

REMINDER: NO podcast July 3rd ... enjoy your Independence by blowing something up!  Cya next time on July 17th at 10pm.

GCC IT Best Practices Document

By request ... I'm putting our IT Best Practices document online for your viewing pleasure.  Actual document can be found at the bottom of my prior presentation post.  Feel free to modify it at will for your own purposes.

I also want to say a huge mega thanks to David Drinnon and team.  I basically plagiarized everything I could from their IT doc over at Second Baptist ... with his permission of course! :-)

I was hoping this wouldn't have to happen, but regrettably it does ... podcast for today canceled.  Counselors will be standing by for those too grief stricken to go on.

Church IT Podcast - outsourcing

There was a great discussion yesterday on the Church IT Podcast (episode 26) about the benefits of outsourcing both IT services/apps and staff.

Since last fall I've been gathering info and seriously pondering now and then on this whole idea of outsourcing.  Several of my IT peers that I highly respect rely heavily on outsourcing ... in particular Tony Dye at Perimeter Church and David Drinnon at Second Baptist.

Yesterday Tony shared some of his philosophy on why Perimeter outsources and the benefits they've gained in doing so.  I've heard Tony's thoughts before, but each time I get new nuggets to chew on.  If you oversee IT I'd strongly recommend you take a listen.

The discussion starts 22mins into the podcast and Tony's comments start 34mins in .. to listen head over to my blog and scroll down on the right to use the talkshoe media player.

I'll try to interview David and get his thoughts Second's outsourcing strategy in the near future as well.
