Microsoft Releases Shared Computer Toolkit

Microsoft has released a toolkit for Windows XP designed for administrators with little or no IT experience that operate shared computers in public places. The Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit combines software tools with best practice documentation, enabling administrators to restrict system resources with the correct user policies, prevent programs from making unauthorized changes to the computers' hard disks and simplify the end user experience by eliminating unnecessary programs and interface elements.

This is great news if you've got kiosk or checkin computers that you'd like to lock down but don't know how to hack the registry or setup GPO's to do so.  We'll test this on a couple of our F1 checkin PC's in the future and report back.

I you want the ultimate (IMHO) in computer "lock down" software check out Deep Freeze.  It rocks!!  I'll post about my experience with it in the school system later.

Yeah, we use deepfreeze here at SNU (www.snu.edu). Works great. I love it, except when it comes to doing updates and installing/uninstalling things for conferences the university holds during the summer months.
