Step #1 - Have very little experience with Ubuntu Linux
Step #2 - Install an Ubuntu virtual machine on the same physical server as your virtual Exchange backend server. This is extremely simple to do with VMware Server ... gotta love VMware!!
Step #3 - Give the Ubuntu VM a Gig of ram and allow it to utilize both/all processors on your physical server.
UPDATE: hmm, no guesses yet? Here's a big hint ...
Step #4 - Leave Ubuntu unattended for 10 minutes then watch your processor get pegged!
SO ... can you guess what caused our email slowness? Perhaps this graph of CPU utilization over time from Tuesday will be helpful ...
Way to go Jason! You must have tried very hard to get those results. Way to be an over-achiever. ;)

My first guess is that the screen saver kicked in. My guess is that it was set to choose a screensaver randomly and chose an OpenGL one that VMWare didn't really do too well with. It probably tried to emulate 3D hardware.
Am I right?

Doh, beat me by 15 minutes. I was going to buy OpenGL screensaver for $1000, Alex. I did that exact same thing on Monday - freaky until I figured out why my mouse cursor was suddenly plodding across the screen.
